Earth & Beyond Tips
Chat
Take some time to understand the Chat window and how you use it. The chat window
appears at the top, centre of your screen. Messages appear in the chat window in
different colours depending on the type of message (this is covered below), and the sender
of the message is always shown at the start of each line.
Initially, I found this window annoying due to the sheer volume of messages spewing
into it. If there are too many messages coming in, you can easily miss some important
message or reply. I've asked questions and totally missed the replies in the past,
due to the constant Broadcasts (see below) by people hawking "lvl3 reactors for
sale", etc.
To reduce the amount of 'background noise' and make the chat
window a far more useful resource, I've taken to turning off some of the default
channels that are shown (they can always be turned back on later). Pull down the
chat window and turn off the Global channels, as shown below:
|
 |
The chat window can be very useful for asking questions, requesting help and forming
groups, but it is also used for a few other purposes... The chat window is also
used to display system messages, information from your ship's computer and from the
current sector or base. You should understand what the different messages are
and who can see each one. The types of messages and their default colours are:
| Channel | Colour | Seen by... |
| Local | Orange | These messages appears in the chat window of everyone in the current sector. You'll generally see chat relating to the current sector, such as "Does anyone want to group up and go bash some pirates?". |
| Group | Yellow | Only people within the current group see these message. If you are not in a group, you will not be able to send or see group messages. You'll generally use the group channel to inform the other group members of your actions, such as "I've got to head back to base to buy some more missiles. I'll be back shortly". |
| Broadcast | Cyan | Everyone in the Galaxy. |
| Personal | White (send) Purple (receive) | These messages are sent between two specific people and are seen by noone else. See below for more details on sending Private messages. |
| System | Green | These messages are seen only by you, and are for information only. You are notified by your ship of events such as jumping into new sectors, equipment status & damage. As you enter starbases, you receive information about that base. |
| Error | Red | These are messages from your Computer/Ship and inform you of invalid actions, for example, if you try and grab something with your tractor beam that is out of range. |

To send a message, hit Enter and a small window appears just below the main chat
window. This window indicates which channel your message will be sent to (Local, Group, Broadcast,
etc.). You simply type your message and hit Enter again to send it.
You can set which is your default channel in the Chat menu. Personally, I set my default
channel to Local, as this is where I ask most of my questions, because they are
generally along the lines of "Where's the gate to XYZ?"... i.e. the
question is really only relevant to the other players in the sector where I'm
currently located.
 |
There's an annoying bug in the behaviour of the default channel... if you set
your channel to Group, you can send messages to the other grouped players using Enter
as above. However, when you leave the group, the default group does not revert to
it's previous selection; it defaults back to Broadcast.
Because of this bug, and to make chat easier to use, learn the keyboard shortcuts
that enable you to instantly send a message to the correct channel:
Hit 'K' to send a message to the Local channel.
'L' sends a group message.
'R' starts a reply to the last Private message received (see below).
|
If you want to send a private message to a specific player, there are a number of ways
to do this. The first is to target the player, which will open a set of buttons
above the targetting display, one of which is Chat. Alternatively, you can click
their image at the top-left of the screen.
However, there are often times when you
cannot target the specific player because they are not near you (they might even be in
a different sector or system). If this is the case, hit Enter to open up a send
window and type in "/t {player-name} {message}", for example,
"/t Jon Hi. Where are you?". You'll quite often
see Local messages along the lines of "Does anyone want a Wormhole to VT?"
and simply replying "Me!" into the Local channel can miss the point (especially
if someone else has sent a message saying "Are there any idiots here?"
in the meantime ). By
replying personally to the sender, you are more likely to get noticed and invited to
join them.
If you have received a Personal message, you can reply using the R key. This will
always send the message to the last person who sent you a Private message.
Navigation
Three words: GET A MAP. It is almost impossible to get about in Earth
& Beyond without a map. In the
main E&B display, you can show the map and switch to a Galaxy view, but I find this
utterly confusing. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer a paper map I can run
my finger over (while furrowing my brow, nodding to myself and looking all knowledgeable).
I'm amazed that there isn't a map in the box, however, you can find maps on-line.
At the time of writing, I know of two sites that have maps. The first is the
'official' map available from the E&B site at Earth & Beyond Galactic Map . Personally,
I find this one a bit busy. Instead, I use the maps put together by TreKain over
at the Maps by TreKain site.
These maps have a couple of minor flaws, but generally will help you get about.
The other thing to get your head round is how it all fits together... You play the
game in a Galaxy (Andromeda, for example). This Galaxy contains a number of Systems
(Sol, Tau Ceti, Alpha Centauri, etc.), each containing a number of Sectors (Earth, Saturn,
etc.). Within each Sector, you'll find Nav Points, planets, bases, etc.
Using the Galactic Map by TreKain (see above), we see this as:
You should be able to just make out the various routes between the sectors in the image
above. The point is, when you need to get from Station A to Planet B, you'll need
to work out a route.
 |
Not all races can use all the routes; some jump gates will only allow certain
races and classes through.
|
 |
Annotate your map with snippets of information - for example, mark which routes you cannot use.
|
 |
Tick off each sector as you visit and explore it. At some point in the future, you will be desparate for Exploration experience and you'll want to go round checking out any sectors you've never visited.

Vendors
Something I didn't spot for ages is that, in starbases, the types of vendors can be
determined by a pair of coloured banners on either side of their stall, as below:
 Trade Vendor |
 Weapons Vendor |
 Equipment Vendor |
 Manufacturing Vendor |
