Logo What a game.  Gran Turismo 1 & 2 on the PSone were ground-breaking, but the latest PS2 version just blows them away.  This goes way, way beyond just the lush new graphics capabilities of the console.  Every aspect of the game has been tweaked for the better, from the menus up.

For example...

In the picture below, you'll see my Evo.  With the Custom suspension kit, you can alter the ride height (and many other things).  In this picture, I set it to the highest.  Roll your mouse over the image and you'll see it on it's lowest setting.  Now, that is a nice touch; your race settings are correctly represented in the replay.

This is lap 2 of the Special Stage 5 course - in the wet.  It's a 5-lap race, and the toughest challenge I've faced in the game at the time of writing.  The rain on the road makes for dramatic driving - you'll hear the car wheelspining out of chicanes and four-wheel drift everywhere - but also provides a visual delight with the reflections in the puddles and constant clouds of spray.

Other things to note in this clip are:
  • The amazing 'environment mapping' as the sequence starts.  See how the paintwork constantly reflects it's surroundings and lighting.
  • Watch out for the glowing disk brakes after some heavy braking about 20 seconds into the clip.  This can be just about seen in the first image below.
One last thing to point out is, the quality of the clip below does not represent the true playback by any stretch of the imagination.  The original PAL-resolution, uncompressed version of this clip was over 1.2 Gigabytes in size.
